Homeschool FTW Three

As I’ve mentioned before, it’s important to take a step back and to see how far you’ve come in life. This is especially true when it comes to homeschooling special needs kids. The going may be slow. They might not be reaching milestones as quickly as other kids. You might feel like you are stagnating or going backwards. But do yourself a favor. Take a step back and find those homeschool wins. And hopefully you’ll be reminded why you chose to take the journey. Here are our three ‘homeschool FTW’ moments of the last few weeks.

Homeschool FTW – Getting to Know our Kids

My husband said this week that one great thing about homeschooling is getting to know our kids. It’s so true! When you send your kids to school for 8 hours a day, you miss out on a lot of their development. With homeschooling you see how they learn, watch their personalities unfold and get to capture the moments. I know that homeschooling is insanely full on. But kids grow up so fast and it’s a privilege to be able to spend as much time as possible with them.

Homeschool FTW – Dominic is a Teacher

Oscar is still quite resistant to reading. He really has to be finessed and will switch off if he feels he’s being forced. I have learnt from experience that the kids will get there in their own time. They have shown us time and time again. It is sometimes really hard to let go and to let them lead. But forcing them has never caused anything more than trauma. Dominic is further ahead with reading and has started helping Oscar. When they’re doing their Reading Eggs, Dominic will guide him. And because of their deep bond, Oscar doesn’t mind. The same goes for when they’re reading their books at night. It has become a much more collaborative activity. It really is so lovely to see!

Homeschool FTW – The Boys Turn 7

For our twins, each birthday is more of a birthday than the last one. This means that each year they are more specific about what they want to get and what they want to do. This year they wanted Jurassic Park dinosaurs and How to Train your Dragon dragons. To some people this looks like pure consumerism. But we look at it in a different way. For us it shows that they are aware of the world around them. They have been able to make a connection between a movie and the real world. And they are now able to articulate exactly what they want. We went to the mall so that they could choose their own gifts. They were able to understand the budget (to a point) and the whole experience was meltdown free. These are all very positive developments! And because we are homeschooling, we are able to make the most of their special day.
