Learning ASL is something we love doing together as a family, because it's such a dynamic and inclusive language. The ASL for homeschoolers self-paced curriculum we've used for the last few years has been from Mr. D Math. And in this post I want to share what makes Mr. D Math ASL 3 such a fantastic Advanced ASL course for homeschoolers.

The Beauty of Learning ASL for Homeschoolers Like Us
As homeschoolers, we have the flexibility to learn what we like in a way that suits us. And in my opinion, ASL is a great example of this for us.I come from a family of bilingual and trilingual language users. My husband is also able to speak a number of languages well.My kids, who are neurodivergent homeschoolers, had never been keen on any language other than English, until they were introduced to ASL.I couldn't be more thrilled that they have really taken to ASL.
- It's given them an opportunity to learn another language, which is important for their education.
- They can learn about Deaf culture, thereby becoming more aware of what inclusivity and acceptance means.
- ASL has given them the ability to communicate in an easier way, as spoken language can sometimes be a challenge for them.
Learning ASL also permits a deeper understanding of Deaf culture, history and experience. Why We Love Mr. D Math ASL 3
This is our third year of using Mr. D Math's ASL programmes. And each curriculum has been as good as the last.Be sure to read my blog posts about our experiences with Mr. D Math ASL 1 and what we thought of Mr. D Math ASL 2.
Mr. D Math ASL 3 is an effective ASL for homeschoolers programme for loads of reasons:
- We've taken advantage of the fact that it's self-paced. It means we can go back when we need to review something. The boys have done this a number of times and it's a been a good way to avoid any gaps.
- Thia is a phenomenal teacher. My boys need someone who is positive, kind and encouraging. And Thia is definitely all of these. She's also available for feedback and adds in lots of extra fun activities that kids can choose to take part in.
- As this is an advanced course, there is a lot of emphasis on practice in ASL, through quizzes and projects. It's been a challenge for the boys but also a great way for them to see how far they've come. And to really practise what they've learnt.
- Mr. D Math ASL 1 and Mr. D Math ASL 2 concentrate a lot on vocabulary. But Mr. D Math ASL 3 is much more about using the language in real conversations. A lot of the lessons are about asking and answering questions, as a way to facilitate two-way communication.
- We haven't completed the course, but towards the end there are stories told in ASL to watch and understand. I'm a certified English language teacher, so I really appreciate this aspects of the course. In my experience, people acquire a language more effectively when using it in all the different ways possible.
Things to Keep in Mind about Mr. D Math ASL 3
Each course builds on the last one, so you need to take each one of the courses in order. So if you're reading this and you haven't taken ASL before, then be sure to start with Mr. D Math ASL 1.This is an advanced course, so it's suited to kids in middle and high school. It assumed that children know grammar and can also write a critical essay.There's also a section on interpreting as a job, which would be most relevant to a homeschooler thinking about college and their future career.Check Out Mr. D Math ASL Courses

In my homeschool, learning ASL is a wonderfully rewarding activity for both my kids and me. It's been so great to work on something worthwhile like this together.Mr. D Math ASL 3, like all of Mr. D Math courses, is a high quality course taught by a fantastic teacher.
